My Playlist: The High School Years

That would be 1993-1997, by the way. I mailed my CDs for Sarah's high school CD swap this weekend, so if you're in my group you should be receiving something from me ... uh, soon, I guess. Anyway, feel free to point and mock:

  1. Oasis, "Wonderwall"
I noticed that at least a couple of other people have this on their lists, so I guess I'm not too lame. Ah, pressure to fit in. Feels like high school already.

  2. Mundy, "To You I Bestow"
I have no idea what other songs this band may or may not have put out. This track's off the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack. I was heavy into soundtracks even then.

  3. No Doubt, "Sunday Morning"
One of my favorite songs from Tragic Kingdom.

  4. Smashing Pumpkins, "Tonight, Tonight"
This song makes me think of a guy my friend Kat was talking to at the time. He loved the Smashing Pumpkins to an insane degree. Like, he didn't even like people jokingly saying something bad about them. Yeah, that should've tipped us off that he was an ass. This is still a good song, though.

  5. Des'ree, "Kissing You"
Another gem from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack. This is such a beautiful song.

  6. Better Than Ezra, "Good"
I remember this being all over the radio. All.The.Time.

  7. Goo Goo Dolls, "Name"
I'm thoroughly sick of this song now -- I can't even listen to it -- but when it first came out I really liked it.

  8. Soundgarden, "Black Hole Sun"
This is a good song, but I mostly included it because the video was so damn freaky. Remember, all those people with the crazy frozen smiles? And the melting doll? That was some messed-up stuff. Good times.

  9. The Proclaimers, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"
Okay, I admit it: I first heard this song when the movie Benny & Joon came out. And I liked it. And I still like it. So there.

  10. Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "The Impression That I Get"
Another one I still love. Great workout song, too. Yeah, like I was working out then. Or now.

  11. Sheryl Crow, "Strong Enough"
Sheryl Crow was first getting big back then, and I like this song much, much more than "All I Wanna Do," so that's why it's on here.

  12. Alanis Morissette, "All I Really Want"
It just wouldn't be right if I didn't include at least one Alanis song. I could've easily thrown all of Jagged Little Pill on here, but I didn't want to be ridiculous. And I figured if anybody else was going to put one of her songs on their list, it'd be "You Oughta Know," so I went with something else.

  13. Garbage, "I'm Only Happy When It Rains"
Another of those bands I loved then and loved now.

  14. The Cranberries, "Dreams"
Included if only because Dolores O'Riordan has such a pretty voice. I didn't know which Cranberries song to include, so I just kind of closed my eyes and picked one. I do remember this song being seemingly everywhere, though.

  15. Sinead O'Connor, "Nothing Compares 2 U"
I know it didn't come out when I was in high school, but I loved it at the time. I remember one day a couple of friends and I must've listened to it literally fifteen times in a row, singing along all the while. Then my boss threatened to throw us out (we were at her house), so we had to knock it off. That was my very first job, actually. I was an admin for the head of a video project for teens. Just about everybody working on it was around my age, so it was a very cool time.
